How to Prepare for a Hurricane

For boat owners in Southwest Florida, hurricane preparation should begin long before a storm appears in the forecast.

A strong hurricane plan can help protect your boat, reduce last-minute stress and give you more time to focus on what matters most: keeping yourself and your family safe.

Every boat, storage situation and marina is different, but there are several important steps every boater should consider before tropical weather threatens Southwest Florida.

Create Your Hurricane Plan Early

Don't wait until a storm is approaching to decide what you'll do with your boat. Determine whether your boat can be trailered, where you will take it if it needs to be moved and how much time you'll need to complete the process.

If your boat is stored at a marina, familiarize yourself with its hurricane procedures. Keep extra dock lines, chafe protection, fenders and other storm-preparation supplies readily available so you're not searching for them when everyone else is preparing at the same time.

Move Your Boat When Possible

If your boat can be trailered, moving it out of the water and to a secure location can provide additional protection from storm surge, waves and damage from other vessels.

Choose your storage location and route ahead of time, and remember that traffic, bridge closures and deteriorating weather can make moving a boat much more difficult as a storm gets closer.

Secure Boats That Must Stay Put

If your boat cannot be moved, follow the preparation procedures recommended by your marina, storage facility and insurance provider. Inspect dock lines for wear, use appropriate chafe protection and position fenders where they can help protect the boat from contact with docks or nearby structures.

Make sure deck drains and scuppers are clear, batteries are charged and automatic bilge pumps and float switches are operating properly. These systems can become especially important during periods of heavy rain.

Reduce Windage and Remove Loose Gear

High winds can turn loose equipment into a hazard. Remove items such as cushions, fishing gear, portable electronics, coolers and watersports equipment when possible.

Bimini tops, canvas and other components that add wind resistance should also be removed or secured according to manufacturer recommendations. Close and secure hatches, doors and other openings that could allow wind-driven rain into the boat.

Document Your Boat and Review Your Insurance

Before the storm, take current photos and video of your boat, equipment and contents. It's also a good idea to photograph your hurricane preparation so you have a record of how the boat was secured.

Review your marine insurance policy before hurricane season and understand any storm-related requirements, haul-out provisions or deadlines that may apply. Keep important documents somewhere safe and accessible away from the boat.

Stay Informed and Put Safety First

Monitor official weather information and local emergency instructions as a storm develops. Conditions and forecasts can change quickly, so having reliable information gives you the best chance to complete preparations safely.

Most importantly, never attempt to ride out a hurricane aboard your boat. Once preparations are complete, leave the vessel and follow evacuation instructions from local authorities. Boats can be repaired or replaced. Your safety cannot.
